5 Reasons You're Not Getting Therapy | The Indigo Project

5 reasons you’re not getting therapy

1 out of 5 people have a mental health condition, but 5 out of 5 people could benefit from therapy. Why? Because we believe we should live to thrive, not just survive.

But there is still plenty of stigma around seeing a therapist, and we thought we’d explore the top five things that are holding people (maybe even you) back…

1. Feeling like my problems aren’t big enough

We hear this one ALL the time. Unfortunately, the common misconception is you need to be pretty fucked up to be in therapy and this is straight up NOT TRUE. In fact, you don’t need ANY problems in order to benefit from therapy. We like to think of it as a PT session for your mind – whether you just want to feel better or want to be super high-functioning, therapy will assess where you’re at and help you level up.

We like to think of therapy as a Personal Training session for your mind …

How Indigo is helping…
BREAKING THE STIGMA – We think seeing a therapist should be as common as seeing a gym trainer. It’s for everyone, at any stage of life.
THERAPY ISN’T FOREVER –  You don’t need to be in therapy forever. We give you the tools you need, relevant to your goals, and show you how to use them (just like gym equipment). The rest is up to you.

2. I won’t know what to say or how it’s conducted

Doing something, anything, for the first time can be intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. But we make it so easy for you to feel comfortable and guide you every step of the way. In our sessions, you have an introductory chat with one of our therapists so they can get to know you a little better, and then you let them know what it is you’d like to work on or need help with. Together, you and your therapist collaborate to find strategies that connect with you.

PEOPLE YOU CAN TALK TO –  All our therapists are warm and personable. They speak your language and have their own life experience to draw from.
COMFY LIVING ROOM VIBES – Our therapy rooms feel like cozy, relaxing living rooms. Come early for a cup of tea and to soak in the atmosphere of ambient music and essential oils.

3. I don’t have time

How often do you complain about not having the time to do the things that are really important to you? For many of us, it can feel impossible to eke out even 10 minutes here or there for a moment of self-care or relaxation. With our crazy busy lives, it’s easy to neglect self-care or self-improvement as selfish and “a luxury” but it’s actually essential if you want to build the best possible life for yourself and be a strong support to your loved ones. Therapy gives you tools to make the most of your time, and find ways you can take care of yourself in amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

4. Money, money, money

We feel ya. Therapy costs money because you want to be sure you’re paying for the best possible person to help give your mind a make-over.  And as the results are intrinsic (and not something that can be shown-off like a six pack of abs or a new BMW) people can be reluctant to spend the money. However, investing in your peace of mind is likely to come back to you ten-fold with more enriched relationships, fulfilment in work and family life, reduced stress and anxiety, and increased overall wellbeing.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLAN – Every year you’re entitled to 10 therapy sessions and the government will help foot the bill (saving you between $80 – $120 per session). To learn more about the mental health care plan, click here.
PERFECT-MATCH PROMISE – We understand it can be dicey laying down cash to see a therapist you’re not sure you click with. That’s why, if your initial Indigo therapist wasn’t the right fit for you, we’ll match you with someone new and that second session is on us.

5. Being judged/Fear of not understanding

This was the top reason you’re not going to therapy – which is ironic because fear of judgement and being misunderstood is something you literally work on in therapy. Not seeing a therapist because you’re worried about what they’ll think of you is like not seeing a dentist because you have teeth. It’s essentially WHY we go. If fear is holding you back from seeking help, imagine everything else it’s holding you back from.

WE GET YOU – Even though we’re all unique, we’re so, so similar in so many ways – especially when it comes to our issues. Our therapists Specialise in specific areas (including stress, trauma, relationships, and more) so you can find someone who really gets you.
IT TAKES GUTS – Being vulnerable is scary, but it’s often the first step on the path to growth. Therapy means being vulnerable. But it also means that you’ve recognised that you want to take every chance to be the best version of yourself and live your best possible life. And what’s braver than that?
