This week we introduce you to Chris Phillips : Photographer
What do you do?
I’m a photographer who specialises in still life for fine art and portraiture.
What is your favourite indulgence?
I would say anything to do with the ocean is my favourite indulgence. Surfing on it, swimming in it,
daydreaming next to it. The sound of it when you’re going to sleep at night. The tight feeling it leaves
on your skin, the smell of it in the air. The quite centred feeling I get when I get out from a swim early
in the morning. Someone once said that you can’t be any closer to nature than when you’re in the ocean
I liked that.
What is your most recent obsession?
I’m doing a series on the big old Morton bay fig trees. Now I see them everywhere. I’m loving that they
alway seem to be in some kind of struggle with the man made world, lifting up the foot path, forcing
holes in the side of concrete walls. Makes you think what this city would look like if you removed the
humans for 50 years and let nature do as it pleased, I’d love to photograph that.
Describe your perfect weekend.
Wake up at reasonably early, meditate so that I’m mentally cleansed for the day. Read some inspiring
pages from a good book while sipping some home made chai in the little atrium off my apartment.
Head down to Bronte pool for a swim or if the surfs good duck into my old apartment to grab my board
for a surf. See who’s about to meet for breakfast, catch up with some friends or walk to the markets at
Bondi to pick up some groceries. Read in a cafe and people watch. Walk back along the
costal path to Bronte, take some photos along the way stopping for a swim at Mackenzies bay.
Read under a tree in Bronte gully, fall asleep. Head back home to Potts Point for lunch. Do some gardening, fix something in my apartment. Develop some photos. Go to a dinner party, see some art or watch a good, film, eat dinner out some place new that I can walk home from, fall asleep reading.
Wake up and repeat.. possibly exploring a new suburb.
What are your biggest challenges as a creative?
My biggest challenges often hinge on the allocation of time between purely personal creative pursuits and using my skills to work on other peoples pursuits in exchange for $
What role does Mindfulness play in your creativity and/or life?
Mindfulness plays a fundamental role in my life, especially when it comes to creativity.
I can easily get caught up focusing on the negatives rather than the positives and opportunities when
I’m not practicing mindfulness. I practice a meditation called Vipassna each morning and night which
strengthens my ability to stay present throughout the day. I find that being mindful allows me to be completely focused on the task at hand which when working on creative projects really opens up the multitude of possibilities that are available in every moment when you are not caught up the judgements that can often go on in the mind that is not present.
